Serbia should undoubtedly sue both Russia and Ukraine over the gas crisis, Economy Minister Mladjan Dinkic said in Vienna today. Dinkic explained that Serbia had a gas supply contract with Russia and that Ukraine had been responsible for the suspension of transit. Dinkic: Serbia should sue Russia, Ukraine Speaking to journalists in the margins of a Euromoney economic forum on Central and Eastern Europe, he said that these two countries had placed the entire Balkans in major energy uncertainty in order to reach a reciprocal agreement. “I think that’s highly irresponsible. It’s irresponsible that Russia did this in January when temperatures are lowest. If they’d wanted to show to Ukraine that they needed to pay a higher price, but so that the populations of countries would not be affected, then they should have shut the taps in summer. Only industry would have experienced any problems then,” the minister pointed out. He called it “truly unacceptable behavior”, adding that Serbia “should sue Russia and Ukraine for damages to its economy if it wants to offset its losses,” putting the question: “Should our citizens have to pay for talks between Russia and Ukraine?” “Failure to do so means these two countries can behave like this every year,” said Dinkic. In his opinion, the issue of compensation should be resolved directly with the two countries, and should this prove futile, then the matter should be taken to the international courts.
