President Boris Tadic says that Serbia will intervene at the UN if the EULEX mission in Kosovo fails to carry out its mandate properly. “Serbia will cooperate with EULEX, and, under a UN Security Council decision, EULEX is obliged to coordinate with Serbia’s state organs,“ Tadic said. "Serbia to track EULEX's work" Speaking in an interview for the Pristina Serb weekly Jedinstvo, the President said that Serbian institutions would be at EULEX’s disposal in the coming period, which he said could be extremely important for the expeditiousness of the EU mission’s work in the province. “EULEX is a technical mission,“ he said, “and in that sense it has status neutrality.“ “All those who mistakenly define the EU mission in Kosovo in their public appearances are undermining the successful work of that mission,“ he said. “The status of Kosovo can be defined only at the UN Security Council and no mission engaged in Kosovo can determine the status of that province,“ Tadic underlined. “The state of Serbia does not have a strategic goal to partition Kosovo, primarily because of the majority of Serbs who live in the province’s central and southern municipalities. Furthermore, such a policy would not be in keeping with the Serbian Constitution,“ the president explained. Should anyone consider setting before Serbia "the absurd condition" that Belgrade should recognize Kosovo independence for the sake of its European integration, Tadic said the answer would be an unambiguous “no“. Tadic added that a number of EU member-states would never recognize Kosovo independence precisely because they were thus defending their own national interests, as they would be jeopardizing their own integrity with an act of recognition. "For these countries, Kosovo independence constitutes a drastic foreign policy and a real precedent, that makes any country that is complex and full of separatist tendencies profoundly unsafe and politically unstable. That is why Serbia has an ally in the fact that Kosovo independence jeopardizes the integrity of both a number of European countries, but also numerous countries outside Europe," Tadic concluded.
