Russian ambassador to Belgrade Aleksandr Konuzin says that trade between Serbia and Russia in 2008 totaled some USD 4bn. "Serbia most important partner in Balkans" He said that there was also a lot of potential for cooperation outside the energy sector, including the traffic and banking sectors. Konuzin stressed that the signing of the energy agreement between Russia and Serbia today, as well as the development of relations with the EU, will help the country consolidate its position in the EU membership talks. He said that the South Stream gas pipeline would reach EU countries, allowing Serbia to become one of the most important energy junctions in the Balkans. The ambassador added that the formation of the Russian-Serbian Business Council was very important to cooperation between the two countries, because it would help organize industrialists at local level, as well as in small and medium-sized companies. The Russian ambassador reiterated that a large number of projects were being implemented between the two countries, adding that the success of all these projects depended on both states and how they used this opportunity. He pointed out that trade between Serbia and Russia last year was some USD 3bn. Chairman of the Russian Section Rajko Majstorovic said that in the first ten months of 2008, trade had reached USD 3.5bn, 46 percent up on the same period in 2007. He said that exports from Serbia in that period were 44 percent greater than in 2007 and were worth USD 489mn, while the remainder consisted of imports from Russia. Earlier, Konuzin said a reciprocal agreement for visa-free travel between Russia and Serbia would be signed in early 2009. Konuzin told journalists at the Serbian Chamber of Commerce that the agreement had already been finalized and that all that remained was to iron out a few technical details. "The technical details are being dealt with in both Serbia and Russia, and I expect an agreement to be ready for signing in the near future," said the ambassador. Aleksandr Konuzin (Tanjug, archive)
