“SPS to join SI next year”
The Socialist International (SI) will accept the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) into its ranks in the spring of 2009, say SPS officials.

The Socialist International (SI) will accept the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) into its ranks in the spring of 2009, say SPS officials. The SI’s Council was expected to give a statement on the SPS’s application in November, but postponed it following personnel changes in the Ethics Committee, which plays a key role in deciding on new members. “SPS to join SI next year” SPS told daily Vecernje Novosti that it believes that the doors of the Socialist International will be wide open to them in the coming year. Party officials state that they have already secured the support of the most influential parties in the bloc. “I have no doubt that we will be accepted as fully-fledged members. Besides Socialist International President Giorgos Papandreou, our candidacy is supported by the Spanish Socialist Party, whose secretary general is the current prime minister, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, the German SDP and the Swedish Socialists,” SPS leader Ivica Dacic told the daily.
