Monday’s parliamentary session ended at about 02:00 CET this morning after the opposition spent four hours citing breaches of the Code of Procedure. Serb Radical Party (SRS) and Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) officials, unhappy that Speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic had extended the parliamentary session beyond 18:00 CET, spent four hours citing violations of procedure. The opposition claimed that the decrease in the number of courts that the law envisioned would have nothing but negative consequences for citizens and would throw the court system into chaos. The opposition stated that there were no clear criteria for the draft law and that the law was poor, which was borne out by the fact that ruling party officials themselves had also submitted numerous amendments to the law. The draft envisions a new network of judicial organs to be implemented from January 1, 2010, and would reorganize the existing 138 municipal courts in Serbia into only 34 primary courts.
