Jean-Pierre Jouyet says that once Hague cooperation is complete, France will support Serbia’s bid for EU candidate status. “France will do everything it can once Serbia completes its cooperation with the international court in The Hague and arrests all the remaining fugitives. The best news would be if progress is made while France is still presiding over the Union,” the French Minister of State for European Affairs told daily Vecernje Novosti. “Hague first, candidate status after” He also said that the EU was counting on Serbia’s support for the deployment of EULEX in Kosovo, adding that the deployment was in Serbia’s best interests, because of the protection the mission would offer the Serb minority and churches in Kosovo. “We are counting on this support regardless of the Serbian stance towards Kosovo independence, which we completely understand,” the minister added. He said that France was ready to help Serbia any way it could during its EU presidency, especially with regards to the visa regime, and do everything in its power to have the visa regime scrapped in the next few months or year. “As far as Serbia and the visa regime is concerned, we are prepared to go further than most other countries. The French Presidency continues to insist to its European partners on giving Serbia clear signals, as soon as the Serbian government honors its obligations to the Hague Tribunal,” Jouyet said. “It all depends on the report of Hague Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz, Serbia’s cooperation with the Tribunal, and palpable signs relating to the arrests of the remaining war crimes fugitives. France wants this to happen as soon as possible. It would be great if it were to happen during the French Presidency, but I sincerely doubt it will,” he said.
