Justice Ministry to focus on reform

Justice Minister Snežana Malović says that her ministry’s priorities will be judicial reform, tackling corruption and organized crime, and EU integration.

Justice Minister Snezana Malovic says that her ministry’s priorities will be judicial reform, tackling corruption and organized crime, and EU integration. She told a press conference marking 100 days of the ministry’s work that other priorities included liberalization of the visa regime, modernization of courts, and the enhancement of the prison sanctions system. Justice Ministry to focus on reform Malovic said that several laws regarding organized crime and corruption had been adopted, adding that a set of judicial laws would also be adopted soon. Malovic added that an automatic proceedings system had been introduced in 14 commercial courts, that the conditions had been created for the implementation of alternative sanctions, adding that yesterday a protocol was signed in Paris on cooperation between the Serbian and French Justice Ministries. The minister said that the laws on the Anti-Corruption Agency, the new law on political parties’ financing, the law on acquisition of property acquired through criminal enterprise, the data protection law and the law on the automatic processing of personal data had been adopted so far. She said that draft laws on the High Judicial Council, State Prosecution Council, judges, public prosecution etc. were soon to enter parliamentary procedure, as were amendments to the Law on Minor Offenses. Malovic also said that the ministry had come across 4,316 “cold cases” from 2002 until June 2007, as well as 517 verdicts that have expired in the last couple of years. The Ministry also had to tackle the issue of lenient sentencing, verging on the legal minimum, especially for criminal acts such as murder, sexual abuse, narcotics, domestic violence and abuse of power. Malovic said that the Law on Judges was being adopted at a time when the country was moving towards the European Union, pointing out that the High Council of Judges and the State Council of Prosecutors would represent a guarantee for the judiciary and prosecution’s independence.
