The 67th anniversary of the mass execution of Kragujevac citizens during World War II is being commemorated today in the Sumarice memorial park. At today’s memorial service, President Boris Tadic said that peace was what Serbia and the entire region needed at this moment in time. 1941 Kragujevac massacre remembered “We remember their sacrifice, we remember the victims, all the people that live with us in this region, everyone who needs to build a foundation for the future,” Tadic said. “Our message is: forgive, but not forget,” he said. Wreaths were laid on the commemorative monument by the president and Parliamentary Speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic. Flowers will be placed on the monument by officials from the government, the City of Kragujevac, the families of the victims, and officials of non-government organizations. On October 20-21, 1941, the occupying German forces executed several thousand Kragujevac citizens, including pupils and professors from the city’s secondary school. The executions were in revenge for an attack on a German motorized column near Gornji Milanovac, when ten German soldiers were killed and 27 wounded. None of the Kragujevac victims participated in the attack nor had there ever been any conflicts in the city itself.
