A Boeing 737 belonging to German XL Airways was forced to make an emergency landing at Nikola Tesla Airport at 07:47 CET after its left engine caught fire. The plane was flying from Frankfurt to Antalia. Three teams of firemen intervened immediately upon landing to extinguish the fire, and all the passengers were safely evacuated. The pilot reported a fault with the left engine to local air traffic control upon entering Serbian airspace, and asked to be allowed to make an emergency landing. Flight control duly responded and the plane landed safely. Flames could be seen coming out of the left engine as the plane came into land. According to police knowledge, the aircraft could have exploded in mid-air had the pilot not reacted quickly. B92 understands that the pilot had only five minutes to manoeuvre and land the plane at the nearest airport. It was only through sheer luck that the plane happened to be flying over Belgrade when the fault was detected. B92
