Former Defense Minister Prvoslav Davinic has been cleared of allocating apartments to members of his then security unit, the “Cobras“. The Supreme Court upheld the verdict of the Belgrade District Court’s Military Section where Davinic was cleared of abuse of office, said Court spokeswoman Vesna Dabic. Ex-minister cleared of abuse of office The District Court dismissed the claims of the District Prosecution’s Military Section on February 2, 2007, citing a lack of evidence. That trial was closed to the public in the interests of guarding state secrets. Davinic was accused of allocating to eight members of his security team apartments bigger than they were legally entitled to in the Belgrade suburbs of Bezanijska Kosa and Cerak. The prosecution also claimed that he had allocated another apartment to one Ljubica Ristanovic, an employee at the Defense Ministry’s Traffic Department, even though she was not entitled to it. Earlier this month, legal proceedings got under way at the District Court over another affair involving Davinic, who is accused of abusing his position in relation to the purchase of military equipment from the Mile Dragic company in Zrenjanin. Yet another ruling is expected from the District Court on whether to launch an investigation against the former minister on suspicion that he abused his position to lease a spy satellite to monitor the administrative line with Kosovo.
