The Belgrade Second District Court has released former Serbian Vice-Consul to New York Igor Milosevic from custody. Court Secretary Nada Djordjevic said that he would be released today from the Central Prison where he has spent the last month, as there was no danger of him tampering with witnesses. Vice-consul released from custody Milosevic was arrested on September 2 on suspicion of abusing his position by helping runaway Serbian student Miladin Kovacevic to obtain a temporary passport, thus enabling him to return to Serbia. This, in spite of the fact that Kovacevic was wanted by the U.S. authorities for the assault of fellow student Bryan Steinhauer and had had his passport confiscated. The investigative judge finished questioning witnesses yesterday, so the investigative procedure against Milosevic could be over very soon, and his case referred to the prosecution, who will decide whether to press charges. Milosevic is suspected of abusing his position by forging official documents. The Serbian Foreign Ministry has also launched disciplinary proceedings against Milosevic and suspended him from his post as vice-council to New York. Yesterday, before the investigative judge, he came face to face with his former boss, former Serbian Consul to New York Slobodan Nenadovic, but both stuck to their initial stories. Milosevic repeated that he had received Nenadovic’s permission to issue the passport, while Nenadovic claimed otherwise.
