Some 1,000 Kosovo Serbs gathered today in Kosovska Mitrovica to protest against the deployment of the EULEX mission. Vice Chairman of the Assembly of Community of Serb Municipalities of Kosovo and Metohija Marko Jaksic sent a message from the protest to the international community and the government in Belgrade that Serbs in Kosovo will never accept the “illegal EULEX mission”. Serbs voice rejection of EULEX “Serbs are against the deployment of EULEX, because it is a mission of occupiers, whose goal is to take away the land we live on, our homes, steal our youth and the childhoods of our children,” Jaksic told the crowd. “Another reason for saying 'No' to the EU mission in Kosovo is because it wants to implement the Ahtisaari plan and create another Albanian state in the Balkans,” he said. Jaksic asked the Local Self-Governance Ministry to adopt the Statute of the southern Serbian province as soon as possible. He said that this would demonstrate for Europe that Kosovo is the heart of Serbia, at the same time calling for new provincial elections, and the formation of an executive council for the province. “Strengthening the Serbian institutions in Kosovo is the best answer to the attempt of creating an independent Kosovo,” Jaksic said. The protest, dubbed Stop to EULEX also heard addresses from Serb Radical Party MP Ljubomir Kragovic and his Democratic Party of Serbia colleague Milan Dimitrijevic, along with Silvia Merkel of the German humanitarian organization Kosmit. The demonstraton ended without any incidents, followed by a peaceful march to the main bridge on the Ibar River, which separates the ethnically divided Kosovska Mitrovica.
