"Construction Mafia" suspects questioned

Zrenjanin Mayor Goran Knezevic and ten other suspects arrested in yesterday's MUP operation have been questioned at the local police station. After questioning, they were remanded in custody for a further 48 hours. On Friday afternoon, they will be brought before the Special Court’s investigative judge. "Construction Mafia" suspects questioned Knezevic’s lawyer Vicentije Darijevic told B92 that his client had denied the charges against him during questioning. The Zrenjanin mayor, a member of the Democratic Party (DS), was arrested together with ten others in a police operation against members of the so-called “Construction Mafia“. MUP stated that Knezevic had been pinpointed as the head of an organized crime group suspected of criminal association, abuse of office, accepting and offering bribes, and falsifying official documentation. The mayor was arrested specifically for fixing a construction tender and illegally appropriating construction land. The suspects are accused of fixing municipal tenders, and embezzling EUR 3.5mn in municipal funds. The suspects include another two senior DS officials from Vojvodina, as well as several owners of private companies. The Special Prosecution has 48 hours to fill out an application to conduct an investigation against the suspects arrested in yesterday’s operation and suspected of organized crime linked to financial malpractice in the construction industry. Special Prosecutor Miljko Radisavljevic told Tanjug that an extensive arrest operation was being led by the Special Prosecution, pointing out that the operation was still under way. "Construction Mafia" suspects questioned

Knežević’s lawyer Vićentije Darijević told B92 that his client had denied the charges against him during questioning. The Zrenjanin mayor, a member of the Democratic Party (DS), was arrested together with ten others in a police operation against members of the so-called “Construction Mafia“.
