EU defense ministers will discuss an end to military operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina at their summit in Deauville, officials say. "The people need to know that not only can we create a mission, but we can terminate one too,” said summit host, French Defense Minister Hervé Morin. EUFOR leaves Bosnia? German agency DPA states that the EUFOR mission was established in December 2004 with the aim of bringing military stability to Bosnia-Herzegovina. At the time, it was the EU’s largest military operation. The EUFOR mission numbers 2,125 soldiers from 22 member-states and from five non-member states including Turkey, Chile and Macedonia. Diplomats believe that since the mission’s main objective has been accomplished, talks about the future of Operation Althea will focus on its transformation into a civil mission that may include training of local police. Ahead of today’s meeting, Spanish Defense Minister Carme Chacon said that she would inform her colleagues of the intention of the 376-strong Spanish contingent to leave Bosnia.
