Serbia will receive EUR 584.4mn of financial help from the European Union up until 2010. The European Commission adopted a plan for financial help for candidates and potential candidates for EU membership today, which will set aside EUR 4.4bn of aid until 2010. EUR 584mn of EU aid to Serbia EUR 359.1mn was set aside for Kosovo, which was listed separately. The funds meant for Serbia will mostly be geared towards strengthening the rule of law, supporting economic and societal development, adopting laws that are in accordance with the EU and strengthening the ability to implement the laws in practice. “This financial help has the goal of strengthening political and economic reforms and development so that their European perspectives can be achieved,” the EC stated. The funds were first announced in November 2007, and the next step should be preparing programs for the implementation of the financial help, in cooperation with the countries that will be receiving the aid. European Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn said that the “road to the EU is tiled in reforms with the goal of improving the everyday lives of the citizens and fulfilling the strict membership criteria.” "Progress on this road demands not only a lot of political will and determination, but also knowledge and financial efforts. The Commission helps these efforts through vital financial aid,” Rehn said.
