President Boris Tadic says that Serbia wants to implement the Stabilization and Association Agreement as soon as possible and receive EU candidate status. After meeting with Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini, Tadic said that Serbia wanted to enter the EU with its own identity, and continue to defend “her Kosovo in a peaceful, European, legal and diplomatic way, and defend the interests of its citizens in EU integration.” Tadic: Candidate status as soon as possible He said that Serbia was a country of great potential and that it wanted other Italian companies to invest in Serbian industry, adding that the agreement with Fiat confirmed that this was not just wishful thinking, but a realistic possibility. “Those who did not believe that Fiat would come to Serbia and that we would become candidates for EU membership, and be on the Schengen White List need to know that we will achieve all of this,” Tadic underlined. He said that Italy was one of the European countries that strongly supported Serbian EU accession, and that Frattini was someone who had personally supported Serbia’s efforts, both as a former EU commissioner and as the current Italian foreign minister. Tadic said that Frattini stood on Serbia’s side because he believed in Serbia’s sincere intentions to integrate into the EU, complete cooperation with the Hague Tribunal, improve the standard of living for its citizens, and create new jobs. “Franco Frattini is a friend of Serbia, and Italy is a European country of great importance to our economic and political future,” the president said. Earlier, Frattini said that Italy supported the unfreezing of the SAA with Serbia as soon as possible. “Italy and I personally support the implementation of the SAA by the end of the year, if not earlier,” Frattini told a joint press conference with Serbian counterpart Vuk Jeremic. “In the EU only one country is against it, and I think that we will be able to convince them to change their position very soon,” the minister assured. Before heading to Belgrade for the signing of the cooperation agreement between Italian Fiat and Zastava, he said that Serbia would receive EU candidate status next year. “We should work on Serbia receiving candidate status by 2009,” Frattini told Italian news agency ANSA. “That is a political issue for Italy because Europe represents a countermeasure to nationalistic impulses that stretch from the Caucasus to Kosovo,” the minister explained.
