Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini says EU member-states will most probably abstain from the vote on Serbia’s initiative at the UN General Assembly. Serbia wants the General Assembly to pass its initiative to seek the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) advisory opinion on the legality of Kosovo’s unilateral independence declaration. Frattini: EU states to abstain “I think that abstention is a good solution,“ said Frattini after meeting with Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic, pointing out that certain EU member-states had not recognized Kosovo, while others opposed the initiative. The Italian foreign minister said that he hoped that a solution would be found to allow the deployment of the EULEX mission in Kosovo, that it should be carried out in an intelligent manner, and that the EU should try to help, not hinder. Jeremic said that Frattini had shown understanding for Serbia’s initiative. He said that it was the “basic right“ of every country to seek the opinion of the ICJ, and that Belgrade was taking advantage of it. He added that he did not expect EU states to oppose the move.
