EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn and Deputy Prime Minister Ivica Dacic met in Brussels on Wednesday. After the meeting, they expressed hope that Serbia will gain the status of an EU candidate next year. Rehn, Dacic: Aiming for 2009 candidature Rehn said that the European Commission will "fully support Serbia's efforts" to gain this next year, Tanjug reports. "Serbia has good prospects within the EU if it fulfills the necessary prerequisites and carries out reforms," said Rehn, adding that according to the best case scenario, Serbia might become a candidate in 2009. "That is our common goal and I can assure you that the European Commission will extend full assistance towards this goal," Rehn said. He also advised that Serbia should unilaterally implement some provisions of the Interim Trade Agreement with the EU, which Brussels refused to allow earlier this month. "We hope that our legislative and political activities in Serbia will result in not only a liberalization of the visa regime next year, but also in gaining the status of an EU candidate state," underscored Dacic. He added that the path of European integrations is one of Serbia's national interests, besides protection of the state integrity and sovereignty. Dacic also announced that legislative activities will be speeded up in the next couple of months, all aimed at moving closer to the EU.
