6 veterans who came to protest in Belgrade yesterday decided to spend the night in front of government HQ and start a hunger strike. They say that the government’s lack of understanding and failure to honor their promises has made them resort to such methods. However, the item, the reservists say, has simply been removed from the agenda. Dusan Nikolic, a member of the reservists’ strike board, has announced for today the arrival of a larger number of protestors from the south of Serbia and a radicalization of the protest. “We have decided to stay here and we are waiting for someone to talk to us. So far no one has shown any understanding for us. We’ve decided to go on hunger strike and we intend to stay here in front of the government building until the end, until all our demands are met,” he said, adding that it remained to be seen who was more stubborn—the government or the strikers. “We’d also like to call on all reservists from the south of Serbia to unite and to lend their support, since support is essential at this moment in time. We can only pull through if we are united,” Nikolic stressed. The veterans are demanding payment of wages owed to them for time spent in Kosovo in 1999, during the NATO air strikes.
