The 200th anniversary of university education in Serbia was marked with a ceremony in Belgrade on Saturday. The University of Belgrade is an institution which, according to Rector Branko Kovacevic and President Boris Tadic, "has links with the history of its people like few institutions do". Two centuries of high education in Serbia Welcoming the guests, including Tadic, Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic and his cabinet ministers, religious dignitaries and guests from some 60 countries, Kovacevic said that the Velika Skola (the Grand School), opened in 1808, while Serbia was still fighting for the liberation from the Ottoman rule. The main task of the school was to educate state administration staff, in order to enable Serbia to make progress, he said and added this mission continued for two centuries. Tadic told the gathering that the opening of the school was an exceptional event, which marked the beginning of the modern Serbian state's development. "The degree of development of education has always been the best indicator of social, cultural and economic development and maturity of a country," Tadic said.
