DS leader and President Boris Tadic has called for a national consensus to be reached over Serbian EU integration. “If we reach a national consensus important for integrating Serbia into the EU, we’ll be making a break with traditional policy in Serbia We would overcome traditional divisions and establish unity over strategic goals despite our differences that are more than evident in ideological and many other aspects,“ Tadic told a session of the Democratic Party (DS) main board. Tadic calls for national consensus on EU The president said that in so doing, a powerful message would be sent not only to the domestic public, but to Europe too, that Serbia had chosen the path of European integration. He stressed that the decision to join the EU was historic and no-one could ever bring it into doubt. “If, by some chance, we don’t get that outcome, no-one will bring that decision into question, but that kind of decision would be taken by a majority that doesn’t involve a new consensus, but new debates in future,“ warned Tadic. The president said that the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) and the energy agreement with Russia, which are on parliament’s agenda, were of historic importance to the country. He said that Serbia must not, from a strategic point of view, be Russia’s enemy. “Taking a strategic decision of the greatest possible importance on EU integration, Serbia has a chance to take a decision in parliament too on its strategic relations with Russia,“ explained Tadic.
