The mountaineers whose ill-fated expedition to K2 in the Himalayas was cut short after one died, have returned to Serbia. One of the mountaineers, Dren Mandic, a member of the Spartak Mountaineering Club from Subotica, died on August 1 while climbing with two other members of the Serbian expedition during their bid to reach the summit at an altitude of 8,611 meters. K2 mountaineering team back in Serbia Expedition member Hostelito Bite told B92 that no-one expected 11 mountaineers to perish in the Himalayas this summer. Bite said that a mountaineer can never be fully prepared for every eventuality when climbing large mountains such as the Himalayas or Everest, especially when faced with unexpected, life-threatening circumstances. “You prepare yourself for the strain you must endure there, but no one ever expects something like this to happen, or that bad things will happen to you there. If we'd known that, we might not have left on the expedition, but this is an experience that might help someone else in future expeditions,” Bite said. Mandic and Bite were in two separate expeditions going on different routes, and the plan was to meet up at the fourth camp and then go towards the summit together. “We were cooperating, we were all friends, we saw each other in the base camp, we had coffee together, but as far as the climb is concerned, we did that separately,” he said. Bite added that one hurdle for every mountaineer was that he or she must overcome the loss of self-confidence that can lead to tragedy in certain situations.
