Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic plans new tactics to counteract obstruction of parliament’s work once it reconvenes. “The new tactic shouldn’t be regarded as my personal rigorousness. But starting September 2, we will not be working as we have up until now. I am in a position to limit speaking time, and to limit MPs to the three minutes that is their right. There will be warnings, interruptions, and expulsions from sessions. There will also be monetary fines,” the parliamentary speaker said. Speaker unveils new tactics to counter obstruction Djukic-Dejanovic told daily Vecernje Novosti that she was not worried about the opposition trying to engineer her dismissal. She said that it was impossible for the parliament to adopt the necessary laws to put Serbia on the road towards the EU by the end of the year, adding that these laws would probably have to wait for regular parliamentary sessions. Asked when the Democratic Party (DS)-Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) alliance in Belgrade would be officially proclaimed, she said that the SPS city board would “take a decision on what is in the current interests of Belgrade citizens in the next few days.” “It would be easier for us to go into new elections, but I do not believe that this is in the best interests of the citizens,” the SPS official explained. Commenting on the minority support of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) at Belgrade local level, Djukic-Dejanovic said that “now is not the time for party interests.” “Our political stances are diametrically opposite where state and national interests are concerned. But, the problem of clashing policies is a lot greater at national level than city level,” she said. The speaker denied that the SPS was trying to distance itself from the arrest of Radovan Karadzic. “The SPS opposed the Law on Hague Cooperation. But the day it was adopted, regardless of our opinions on it, it had to be respected. That is why there is no point running away from it. It is absurd that the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) and New Serbia, who adopted the law, are now protesting against it. We did not betray anyone, we simply honored out legal commitments,” Djukic-Dejanovic said.
