Macedonian border police are denying entry to people carrying the new Kosovo passports, writes Pristina daily Zeri. According to the daily, the reason for this is that the Macedonian government has not yet officially recognized the new travel documents. “Macedonia not accepting Kosovo passports” The first passports were issued in Pristina yesterday, and were presented by Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci. Kosovo officials have expressed surprise at the reaction of Macedonian border police, because, writes Zeri, the Macedonian government announced that it would accept the new passports, regardless of the fact that it had not yet decided to recognize Kosovo’s unilateral independence. Macedonian media said earlier this month that in spite of the fact that Macedonia had not recognized Kosovo’s independence, it would accept the province’s new passports. Skoplje media reported that according to its sources in the government, Macedonia would accept the new passports, and would consider them to be a continuation of the old passports issued by UNMIK, thus allowing Kosovo citizens to travel to Macedonia without any problems. At the same time, the Macedonian government will not formally recognize the “Republic of Kosovo” passports. Montenegrin and Croatian authorities have announced that they will be accepting the new travel documents.
