Croatian citizens are more familiar with the WW2 events than those related to the 1991-1995 war, a poll shows. The phone survey organized by a veterans' group, dubbed the Association of Defenders, Disabled and the Widows of the Croatian War for Independence, otherwise employed by Podravka from Koprivnica, interviewed 444 residents of Zagreb, Koprivnica, Karlovac, Varazdin, Virovitica and Split. Poll: Croatians know little about 1990s war The survey included ten questions "about the making of Croatian state and the heroes of homeland war". But only one in nine gave the correct answers, the results showed. According to the survey, this result related to the exact date of Franjo Tudjman’s death, while as many as 85 percent of those interviewed knew the date of Yugoslav dictator Josip Broz Tito's death. Only one out of seven surveyed knew who Josip Jovic, the first victim of clashes at Plitvica Lake resort, was, as well as the exact date of his death, while one out of eighteen people knew the name of the first Croatian Defense Minister. Only 21 percent of those surveyed knew the exact date of Croatia’s declaration of independence from Yugoslavia, and one out of six knew the date of the fall of Vukovar. Even today people know more about Bosko Buh – a Second World War communist figure – the association complained, than about Josip Jovic. They say that "this can be explained by the fact that the last war is less talked about" in Croatia than the one over half a century ago.
