The Macedonian parliament has elected a new government to be led by Nikola Gruevski, in spite of an opposition boycott. 77 of 120 MPs voted for the government. In a statement to journalists, Gruevski said that he had decided to retain nine ministers from the previous government, who would continue “the good work”. New Macedonian govt. formed “In less than two years, we’ve proven that Macedonia can move forward faster. This government is a mixture of youth and experience," said Gruevski. Presenting the government’s platform, the prime minister listed five priorities—economic growth of at least six percent, EU and NATO membership, tackling corruption, achieving inter-ethnic harmony, and better education for Macedonian citizens. He also stressed his support for continued talks with Greece under UN mediation over the country’s name, adding that he would never accept a solution that compromised Macedonia’s national identity. Gruevski’s VMR)-DPMNE party triumphed at the June 1 elections and formed a coalition with the Albanian Democratic Union for Integration. The ruling coalition has an absolute majority in parliament with 63 MPs from the VMRO-DPMNE, 18 from the DUI, and one MP from the Party for the European Initiative. Opposition parties including the left-of-center Sun coalition led by the Social Democrats and the Democratic Party of Albanians boycotted the parliamentary session. The Social Democrats have been boycotting parliament since last week when their deputy leader was arrested and accused of corruption, while the party claims that the arrest was politically motivated. The DPA, meanwhile, has been boycotting parliament since it was constituted, accusing the government of electoral fraud. Voting had to be repeated in a number of places following violent clashes between supporters of the two main Albanian parties. Nikola Gruevski (FoNet, archive)
