The Belgrade Assembly’s session scheduled for Monday has been postponed for 10 days, because of "the situation in the city". The postponement was proposed by the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) following the street protests and attacks on journalists over the past few days. Belgrade assembly session postponed The LDP says that the capital’s ruling majority could be formed on Monday, were it not for the new circumstances.. The Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS), however, say that nothing has yet been arranged, and that negotiations have yet to begin. Senior New Serbia (NS) official Dubravka Filipovski said that the postponement showed that the new coalition between the SPS and the Democratic Party (DS) was not working and that the capital needed new elections. "This rescheduling proves that the new alliance formed between the Democratic Party (DS), SPS and LDP is not working, and that this new coalition is unnatural. The only real solution would be to call new elections to see what Belgraders really want in view of the new circumstances ,” said Filipovska. Assembly Speaker Branislav Belic said that neither he, the DS-led coalition, the SPS, or the LDP would be attending Monday’s session, meaning that there would no quorum for the assembly to be able to work. He said that he did not want the atmosphere from the streets of Belgrade to be transferred to the City Assembly. “The Serb Radical Party, which is behind the Belgrade riots where journalists, as far as I know, have been assaulted, will probably try to transfer the atmosphere from the streets to the Assembly, and that is something we don’t want”, Belic stressed. The final date for the election of the mayor and the city council is August 22.
