Belgrade Assembly Speaker Branislav Belic says that the capital's new mayor will be chosen at Monday’s assembly session. Belic told Tanjug that Monday’s agenda would include the adoption of a new code of procedure, the selection of a new mandate commission and mayor, a deputy mayor and members of the city council. "Belgrade mayor expected on Monday" Belic said that preparations were being made for the Monday session, adding that meetings with councilor groups would be held, though he would not go into any further details. Under the new Law on the Capital City, the future mayor of Belgrade will be elected for a four-year term, by secret ballot, and will require the backing of a majority of city assembly officials. So far, the only mayoral candidate mentioned has been Dragan Djilas, the candidate of the Democratic Party-led “For a European Belgrade” coalition. The city assembly has a deadline of a month after the constitutive meeting to select its executive—namely, the mayor and city council—and 90 days to adopt the city statute. The Belgrade assembly was constituted on July 21, when Belic was appointed, with Irena Ljubomirovic-Ivankovic named as secretary. The mayoral candidate is proposed by the assembly speaker, and the mayor, in turn, proposes a candidate for his or her deputy, as well 13 candidates for the city council. The Belgrade assembly has 110 representatives--45 from the “For a European Belgrade” coalition, 40 from the Radicals, the DSS-NS has 12, the LDP has seven, and the Socialists six.
