Slovenian Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel says that Kosovo was the biggest challenge of the Slovenian EU presidency. Rupel was speaking at a reception held last night for participants of the Second Global International Studies Conference in Ljubljana. Rupel: Kosovo was biggest challenge “Despite differing views on the issue of independence among the member-states, Slovenia, as the presiding country, managed to establish unity within the Union in terms of the most important guidelines for future European policy,” the minister explained. He added that “Kosovo has thus far been recognized by 20 EU member-states,” and that “in spite of its determined stand over Kosovo, Serbia displayed a great deal of responsibility.” Among other things, Rupel added that “the signing of the Stabilization and Association Agreement in April proved to be the only right decision for Serbia, an investment for peace and stability in the region,” as evidenced by the arrest of Radovan Karadzic. Speaking to conference participants, the minister also highlighted the importance of Slovenia’s determination to set the issue of the Western Balkans and inter-cultural dialogue as its top priority during its presidency.
