The DS and Liberal Democratic Party have agreed to work together on EU integration. The two parties have announced that they will work together in parliament to adopt laws on establishing European standards in Serbia. DS, LDP cooperation towards EU The Democratic Party (DS) and the LDP say that they will base their partnership on the adoption of new laws in parliament that will establish a lawful state and the rule of law, as well as European standards in all domains. Above all, that means the adoption of a set of laws on the judiciary, a general law against discrimination, and a law on road safety. Even though the LDP vigorously condemned DS leader and President Boris Tadic’s policies during the election campaign, the parties claim that this cooperation is not a form of reconciliation, but a state interest. “We did not fight to such an extent that we now need to reconcile. We leave such strong words to others. This is simply something that is Serbia’s basic interest—the adoption of new laws. I can only say that we are very pleased that we’ve managed to surmount certain inter-party differences and work together, regardless of who’s in power and who’s in the opposition,” said the LDP’s Ivan Andric. Despite their differences on the Kosovo issue, the DS does not rule out the possibility that the LDP may fully support the government’s policy. “Citizens are less interested in ideology, so to say. They want us to finally start working. We’ve had many elections in the past 18 months. I think that citizens are a bit tired of it, and that they would like the politicians to make an agreement and start working,” says Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic. Dragan Bujosevic, a journalist for weekly NIN, says that this partnership is logical, and that the agreement will help both parties. "For the LDP it means essentially some sort of socialization, a kind of acceptance of the LDP as a factor on Serbia’s political scene. For Tadic, on the other hand, it means that he can show the Socialists and the G17 Plus that there is a third player, and that they shouldn’t let their appetites get out of hand,” Bujosevic said. He said that this agreement showed that the LDP had a clear policy, that the party wanted to do something important for the democratization of Serbian society and contribute to the development of the country’s institutions.
