NATO defense ministers have confirmed in Brussels that NATO will offer its support in creating the Kosovo security services. “NATO will oversee the disbandment of the Kosovo Protection Corps, and the formation of the Kosovo security forces,” said NATO spokesman James Appathurai, adding that those forces would be professional and multi-ethnic, and armed with light weaponry. NATO to help Kosovo security forces NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said that during a two-hour meeting, the ministers had agreed that the alliance would carry out new duties in Kosovo, and would help the province strengthen democratic institutions. Pristina daily Ekspres reports that Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci and his Democratic Party of Kosovo were having difficulty in finding personnel for the government’s new sectors, and that the biggest challenge was the position of minister for the security forces. Unnamed sources told the paper that the contenders included Kosovo Mitrovica Mayor Bajram Rexhepi, though he has denied the speculation. Another candidate is Azem Shalja, one of the founders of the Kosovo Liberation Army, though Ekspres rules him out. “The minister’s identity will be a surprise,” add the same sources.
