Slovakian Foreign Minister Jan Kubis says Bratislava welcomes the reconfiguration of the UN mission to Kosovo. After talks in Belgrade with Serbian counterpart Vuk Jeremic, he said that Slovakia supported resolving Kosovo’s status on the basis of UN Security Council Resolution 1244, as well as all UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s activities. Slovakia supports UN reconfiguration "Slovakia supports the EU mission’s increased presence in Kosovo under the umbrella of the UN and Resolution 1244," said Kubis after his meeting with Jeremic. The Slovakian foreign minister said that he was heartened by new Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic’s comments regarding Belgrade’s European orientation, and the need for speedy ratification of the Stabilization and Association Agreement with the EU. Jeremic said that Slovakia and Serbia had the same position over Kosovo, which, he said, would always be an integral part of Serbia. The new government would pursue a policy of continuity as far as Kosovo was concerned, said the minister, adding that he hoped that parliament would support such a policy. He said that the new government was prepared to discuss with the UN options for the legal involvement of the international civil presence in Kosovo. “A solution for Kosovo can be reached through compromise and dialogue, and that path is established by Resolution 1244,“ he explained. Jeremic said that there had been no changes as yet to the Action Plan, or the issue of recalling ambassadors from countries recognizing Kosovo’s unilateral independence. The foreign minister said that the Serbian government’s plan was for the country to receive candidate status by the end of the year, and conveyed his thanks to Slovakia for its support of Serbia’s European orientation. Kubis and Jeremic agreed that there were no unresolved issues between the two countries, though they both expressed their hope for enhanced economic cooperation.
