The election of the new government was preceded by an hour-long debate on assassinated PM Zoran Djindjic. The discussion was launched by Serb Radical Party (SRS) MPs, who said that Djindjic had been a “Mafia prime minister”, to which only Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) MPs reacted. SRS launches attack on "Mafia PM" Djindjic SRS MP Vjerica Radeta, while criticizing the new cabinet, took the opportunity to launch a scathing attack on the late prime minister. "Let me remind you, that on Vidovdan, seven years ago, you kidnapped Slobodan Milosevic and sent him to The Hague. Let me also remind you of the remarks of Zoran Djindjic, the Mafia Prime Minister, who told Carla Del Ponte: ‘Take [Vojislav] Seselj to the Hague and don’t bring him back,” Radeta told parliament. That sparked a heated debate as SRS and LDP MPs exchanged places on the speaker’s podium for over an hour. Among them was Ivan Andric, who was surprised that the Democratic Party (DS) had not reacted to the insults. "Does this mean that the ruling coalition led by the Democratic Party, as the biggest party in parliament, has, in the name of national reconciliation, decided that the sentence ‘Zoran Djindjic was a mafia prime minister’, is not a breach of the code of procedure? Believe me, this session won’t continue if you act so indifferently to that fact,” Andric said. The discussion ended when DS whip Nada Kolundzija addressed the hall. "We’re not responding to the insults as it is our principle that these statement say more about the attackers, rather than the man to whom history will accord the place he deserves, as the first democratic prime minister of Serbia. At the same time, we think that it is distasteful to use his name and his sacrifice to get cheap political points. It’s for that reason that we’re refraining from reacting to either side’s comments,” Kolundzija said. Speaker Slavica Djukic Dejanovic tried to cool passions on a number of occasions, stating that MPs should use euphemisms, or polite terminology, when expressing their personal beliefs.
