Pieter Feith has welcomed a decision to extended the mandates of municipal presidents in the Serb-majority towns in Kosovo. "Pieter Feith has welcomed the Kosovo government decision to extend the mandates of those municipal officials appointed to their offices by the UNMIK chief in December 2007. This decision makes the legal status of the governing structures in these five municipalities clear," his spokesman said in Pristina. EU rep welcomes "extension of mandates" Feith is the EU representative in Kosovo. He also heads the International Civilian Office. The government in Pristina made this decision last Thursday. Albanian language media in the province are saying that the move was in fact a confirmation of an earlier UNMIK decision, never approved by former UNMIK head Joachim Ruecker, because the UN Secretariat in New York would not back it. The Kosovo elections of Nov. 17 last year were boycotted by most of the province's Serbs, after which Ruecker extended the mandates in question. Belgrade has in the meanwhile, on May 11, organized local elections of its own in Kosovo. Reports say that "most of the municipal presidents" that are mentioned in this Kosovo government decision have rejected it.
