Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu says that international courts are not competent to deal with the issue of Kosovo’s independence. Sejdiu made the comments after President Boris Tadic announced that Serbia would ask the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to conduct a full legal analysis of Kosovo’s declaration of independence. "Courts not competent to rule on Kosovo" Sejdiu thinks that this is a “wrong approach.” “It’s a bad approach by Serbia, and its president too,” Sejdiu told Deutsche Welle, adding that the entire international community was involved in the process of Kosovo’s independence. Sejdiu said that the existence of parallel governing structures formed by the Kosovo Serbs was bad, and that it could lead to a rise in tensions, but added that they would not have any “special or long-term effect.“ “This way, part of the Serbian people is held under an illusion. The impression is created that the Kosovo issue can be settled in Serbia or that Kosovo was a part of Serbia,” said the Kosovo president. He called on the Serbs living in Kosovo to return to everyday life, and accept the new reality and become part of Kosovo’s institutions along with other communities in Kosovo. Speaking about a possible change in relations with the formation of a new government in Serbia that looked like including the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS), Sejdiu said that it was important that the Serbian people elected an elite that would lead the country towards EU and NATO integration, but also towards good relations with neighboring countries, including Kosovo. "We want to establish good relations with Serbia, as between two sovereign countries,” he said. Sejdiu said that he was satisfied with the number of countries that had so far recognized Kosovo. “More countries will recognize the Republic of Kosovo”, he announced. Asked to comment on whether the division of responsibilities between UNMIK and EULEX was an introduction to a sort of a partition of the province, he said that there were no such indications, and that there was no need for a partition of the province. "We’ve ended the negotiating process on Kosovo. Kosovo is independent and has international support,” Sejdiu underlined Fatmir Sejdiu (FoNet, archive)
