Dusan Janjic of the Club 21 NGO says that Serbia cannot realistically expect to become an EU member before 2021. Janjic, a long time head of the Forum for Ethnic Relations, was speaking to journalists today in Belgrade presenting the new non-governmental organization. "Serbia will join EU no sooner than 2021" "We want to tell citizens the truth, we will not lie like Bozidar Djelic or the Slovenian ambassador, who should not take pride in misleading the Serbian public into believing that there is a possibility that we could become an EU member in four years' time," he stressed. According to him, "most of the problems that citizens see as a protectorate" stem from the fact that those who ask for assistance are not coming forward with clear projects and are not saying "what the limit of the cooperation is". Conversely, Janjic said, the Club 21 members, in their contacts in the country and abroad, are making it clear where the line us: Serbia as a stable country and her EU accession by 2021. He added that "everyone is aware the government, that is supposed to do something on the road toward the EU, is weak and blocked with problems and the way in which it was put together". Janjic believes that Serbia's civil society which brought down the Milosevic regime, has been completely broken up and continues to exist as "nuclei", but, that it could be easily renewed. "In Serbia, the civil society and the democratic public have been used on October 5 [2000], to then turn into several pyramids controlled by tycoons. The civil society has disappeared, just like everything else, just like the economy," he continued. As for the likely new government, Janjic believes that "no matter how weak it will be, it will last two to two and a half years". He warned that Serbia does not need a return to the Milosevic era, and stressed that President Boris Tadic must be aware that Milosevic, too, started out with the reconciliation idea, which, according to him, "is a 19th century idea, unlike political culture, negotiations and sticking to goals agreed upon".
