UNMIK says the mission’s regional spokesman in Kosovska Mitrovica did not express the UN’s views over the new Kosovo Serb assembly, writes daily Koha Ditore. “The comment made by [Georgy] Kakuk was not UNMIK’s view, because it’s known that we view the May 11 elections as invalid,” said UNMIK spokesman Alexander Ivanko. "Spokesman's views don't reflect UNMIK's" Speaking to Kohavision on Saturday, Kakuk said that he did not wish to comment on whether “that assembly is legitimate or not.” “We see this more as a symbolic, rather than operative, body,” he said. Kosovska Mitrovica Municipal President Bajram Rexhepi pounced on these remarks, saying that Kakuk’s views did not represent UNMIK’s widely-held position. “This kind of confusion among UNMIK officials in Mitrovica shows that officials are cooperating with the parallel Serb structures and the election winners that UNMIK doesn’t recognize, which means that UNMIK is losing credibility,” warned Rexhepi. The Pristina daily points out that some of Kakuk’s comments have aroused the displeasure of representatives of Kosovo institutions and those in Kosovska Mitrovica on a number of occasions in the past.
