A prominent anti-corruption official has criticized announcements that the Democrats (DS) and Socialists (SPS) will enter a government coalition. President of the Anti-Corruption Council Verica Barac told Belgrade's daily Blic that such a cabinet would demonstrate that there had been no resolute break up with the pre-2000 period. "October 5 defeated with DS-SPS coalition" Slobodan Milosevic, and his Socialists, were ousted in October, 2000. The four subsequent governments were led by the Democrats, and the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS). "There was no work to build institutions, the issue of responsibility for what happened to us was never raised, secret services have not been reformed, secret dossiers have not been opened… Therefore, we have a continuity of power." "The SPS is not reformed, nor is it ready to take responsibility for what is has done. This is a defeat of everything we expected would happen after October 5," Barac said. According to her, the government has no sincere intention or willingness to fight corruption. "This is obvious in that the only important thing in the negotiations over a new government is who gets which ministry," she said, and added that giving party people positions was central, while whether they could do their jobs was irrelevant. Asked whether it will be the EU that might exert pressure in order to decrease corruption and see that European standards are met, Barac said that it will be "hard for someone from the outside to force you if you don't want to". She also said that the influence of tycoons and big capital on the composition of the likely new government is undeniable, "because tycoons look to protect their own interests". "C Market, Port of Belgrade, Mobtel, none happened by chance… these are the deals that people who finance certain political parties have profited from, and then some. In this way, tycoons are imposing their interests to the common interests." "Via party financing and in other ways, what's in the interest of powerful individuals becomes more important than what's in the interest of the state," Barac concluded.
