The Slovenian EU presidency has welcomed the prospect of a pro-EU government being formed in Serbia, which Dimitrij Rupel claims is partly down to Brussels. “That is also, indirectly, a great success for the EU,“ the Slovenian foreign minister told German agency DPA in Berlin, adding that he was sure that the EU and UN’s dispute with Serbia over Kosovo independence would be resolved constructively. "Pro-EU govt. thanks to Brussels" According to Rupel, the chances had now increased of war crimes suspects Ratko Mladic and Radovan Karadzic being delivered to the Hague Tribunal. He said that the agreement on the formation of a pro-European government in Serbia was a victory for those EU member-states that had counted on Serbia’s pro-European forces from the very outset. Earlier, Council of Europe (CoE) Secretary-General Terry Davis expressed his happiness that a pro-EU government was to be formed in Serbia, though he did not want to go into the details of its make-up. "I don't comment on internal affairs. I don't form the government.. and it's not me that needs to decide who to put in it-- the Socialists, Kostunica's party, Tadic's party or the Radicals. That's what the citizens decided," Davis told journalists in Strasbourg. He said that he was deeply disappointed that he had not had the opportunity to speak to President Boris Tadic, who was forced to call off his trip to Strasbourg, but he added that he fully understood that the political situation in Serbia was currently the president's priority. The secretary-general also said that he hoped to meet with Tadic during the UN General Assembly in New York, adding that this would be an opportunity for them to discuss Kosovo.
