Croatian President Stjepan Mesic says that it is the state’s obligation to enable all refugees to return to their homes in Croatia. “Croatia’s duty is to fight for the return of those members of the Croatian nation who were victims of the war in neighboring Bosnia-Herzegovina,” he said at a ceremony to mark International Refugee Day. Mesic: Refugees must be able to return Mesic said that Croatia had special reasons for remembering on this day everything that had happened in its past, adding that there was a lot to be done to remedy the repercussions. The Croatian president said that the wars that had led to the break-up of Yugoslavia had been characterized by ethnic cleansing and merciless persecution and displacement of people, based on ethnic origin. He said that at no moment was there “any doubt who started that war, or who should take the most responsibility,” adding that it was a sad fact that ethnic cleansing and persecution had been perpetrated by all sides. Working within the framework of the UN and other international organizations, Croatia would continue to insist that conditions needed to be created to allow all refugees to return safely, regardless of their country of origin, race, nationality or religion,” Mesic said.
