A two-day European Council session begins today in Brussels, where the Western Balkans’ European perspective will be on the agenda. Slovenian Prime Minister and council's President Janez Jansa will be chairing the meeting for the last time in Slovenia's six-month presidency. W. Balkans on European Council agenda Leaders of the 27 EU member-states will discuss further measures that need to be taken for ratification of the LisbonTreaty following its rejection at the Irish referendum. In his call for a meeting of the council, Jansa said that it was important for the EU to show that it would maintain progress and remain on the path towards progress. The second important topic on the agenda will be the discussion of high oil prices and the political repercussions they could have on the EU. The council will also discuss freedom, security and legal issues. EU leaders are also expected to confirm the the Western Balkans’ European perspective, and to report on the implementation of the so-called Thessaloniki agenda, where a European perspective was promised to the countries of the region. There will also be discussion of Slovenia's readiness to implement the euro as its national currency on January 1 of next year, a discussion which will also involve European Parliament Speaker Hans-Gert Pottering.
