Edvard Broz, grandson of Josip Broz Tito, has failed to appear at the Belgrade District Court, where he is on trial for causing a road accident in 1992. His friend Gojko Popovic, a passenger in the car he was driving, died in the accident on the Batajnica road. Tito's grandson fails to answer summons Broz’s lawyer Vladimir Petrovic said that he was “surprised that Broz hadn’t come“ and asked the court to reschedule the hearing. He said that he would inform the court of the reasons for his client’s absence in due course. The hearing was rescheduled for September 17, when a traffic expert is due to present a verbal forensic analysis of the accident. Broz and his son were seriously injured in the accident, while his brother-in-law and nephew, Zarko and Bojan Pejic, who were also in the BMW, sustained minor injuries. The district prosecution has charged Broz with “a serious breach of road safety leading to death,“ after causing the accident on August 20, 1992, under the influence of alcohol. In his defense, Broz claims that he was under the legal alcohol limit, and that he did not cause the accident deliberately. He said that he had suffered from a guilty conscience for 16 years since the accident. Broz is on bail after giving the court guarantees that he would respond to all summons, and his passport has been retained for security purposes. Until January 21 this year, when he was arrested at the Croatian-Serbian border on a Serbian MUP warrant, Broz had been living in Zagreb.
