Athens and Skopje will continue with efforts to overcome their dispute over Macedonia's name as their representatives meet in New York tonight. The negotiations at the UN headquarters, mediated by U.S. diplomat Matthew Nimitz, look set to be as tough as the rounds held previously, reports suggest. Greece, Macedonia to continue name talks For the past 17 years, Greece has disputed its northern neighbor's right to use its constitutional name, on grounds that it implies territorial pretentions toward a Greek province, also called Macedonia. Skopje's chief negotiator, Nikola Dimitrov, met with President Branko Crvenkovski and Premier Nikola Gruevski last night, to receive fresh instructions. These directions are that Macedonia will not change its position, in other words, it will continue to refuse to change its name. On the other side of the divide, Greece is saying that "no proposal will be accepted unless it is final" – this is what the government in Athens has authorized its chief negotiator Adamantios Vassilakis to push for. Meantime in Brussels, Macedonia's Foreign Minister Antonio Miloshoski told reporters that the positions of the two countries may become closer should Greece decide to recognize the Macedonian nation's right to self-determination. Media in Macedonia are saying that July 9 is the deadline for that country and make progress on its stalled NATO ambition. On that day, Croatia and Albania are set to sign a membership protocol with the western military alliance. Macedonia's bid is blocked by Greece.
