UNMIK chief Joachim Ruecker has decided to extend the Serb municipal presidents' mandates for another six months, a Pristina newspaper says. The Albanian language daily Zeri quotes diplomatic sources in its report today. Report: Ruecker extends Serb mandates The German diplomat at the head of the UN mission in Kosovo met Friday with what the paper refers to as "the big five ambassadors" and the Russian office chief, to tell them about his decision. Allegedly, the meeting passed in a stormy atmosphere as Russia's Andrey Dronov opposed such a move. According to the same sources, Ruecker came up with two proposals, one of them being to appoint those municipal chiefs elected in the May 11 ballot in Zvecan, Zubin Potok, Leposavic and Strpce. This was opposed by the western European countries and the U.S., the report said, who reminded that UNMIK deemed the elections illegal. It was this, the paper continues, that made Ruecker decide to extend the existing municipal presidents' mandates, something "vehemently opposed by Russia". Ruecker already once opted for the same solution in the wake of the November 2007 elections organized in Kosovo, boycotted by the province's Serbs.
