Ana Ivanovic is the new French Open champion, having beaten Russian Dinara Safina in straight sets (6:4, 6:3). Ivanovic, who lost in last year's final to Justine Henin, was playing in her third Grand Slam final, after defeating fellow countrywoman Jelena Jankovic in a thrilling semi final 2-1 (6-4, 3-6, 6-4). Ana Ivanovic reigns in Paris Safina, by contrast, swept aside fellow Russian and world no.2 Svetlana Kuznetsova 2-0 (6-3, 6-2) in her semi, and had the opportunity to step out of the shadow of her more acclaimed elder brother, Marat, as she competed in her first Grand Slam final. Ivanovic made the better start, and was within one point of taking a 5:1 lead before Safina hit back taking the next seven points, and levelling the match at 4-4. However, the Serb world no.1 was not to be disheartened as she broke Safina once more and served out for the first set. The second set continued in the same vein as the first, with very little choose between the two players, and the crucial break came in game five, which allowed Ivanovic to take a 4-2 lead. Safina dug deep in game seven to hold her service, with both players pulling off some memorable shots, but when Ivanovic held her service in the following game, the fight seemed to go out of the Russian, and Ivanovic cruised to the final game to claim the title. Another Serb very much in final action this weekend is Nenad Zimonjic. Zimonjic, together with Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik, lost 2-0 (2-6 6-7) to Bob Bryan and Victoria Azarenko in today's final of the mixed doubles, though he has an opportunity to make amends soon when he and Canadian Daniel Nestor take on Luis Horna and Pablo Cuevas in the final of the men's doubles.
