The Foundation for the Truth about the Homeland War has collected almost EUR 200,000 for the legal expenses of Croatian Hague Tribunal defendants. At a donors’ dinner on Tuesday, memorabilia and trophies belonging to Croatian sports stars were auctioned off, while a ticket for the dinner at the Zagreb Westin Hotel’s crystal palace cost some EUR 140. EUR 200,000 collected for Croatian Hague defendants The athletes gave their trophies and memorabilia to the Foundation in a sign of support for General Ante Gotovina and other Croatian generals indicted by the Hague Tribunal. The most sought-after item were a pair for the shoes belonging to basketball player Kresimir Cosic, purchased by a man from Zadar for EUR 13,791. Janica Kostelic’s ski jacket fetched EUR 12,690, while the scarf and hat of a French police officer given to former Croatian football coach Miroslav Blazevic during the 1998 World Cup in France was bought for EUR 11,722. Trophies and memorabilia were donated by Croatian footballers, water polo and basketball players, legends from Dinamo and Hajduk, while another auction has been scheduled in the Fall owing to great interest. “I hope that this action will help bring them back to us soon, because if we owe anyone anything, it’s them,” Blazevic told Croatian agency Hina. Prior to the start of the auction, a short film was shown at the dinner about every athlete and item to come under the hammer.
