Vojislav Kostunica says Dimitrij Rupel’s observation that Serbia should establish good neighborly relations with Kosovo is “absolutely unacceptable.” The prime minister said that the “call for the establishment of good neighborly relations with a part of its own territory has never been asked of any country, and Serbia can have only one answer to such a request, and that is that Kosovo is a province within Serbia, according to both international law and the Serbian Constitution.” Kostunica dismisses Rupel comments “Rupel’s rejection of any attempt to restart talks regarding Kosovo’s status is also unacceptable, since Kosovo is, to him, definitively independent,” Kostunica said. He said that “the vast majority of countries in the world do not recognize Kosovo’s independence, but recognize Serbia’s legitimate, international recognized borders, with Kosovo inside Serbia.” “Rupel can condemn this reality, but he cannot change it,” Kostunica insisted. The Slovenian foreign minister said that good neighborly relations between the countries of the Western Balkans were the “starting point” for their integration into the EU, according to daily Politika, citing sources close to Rupel. Politika stated that this meant that Serbia was expected to demonstrate cooperativeness, not only with Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia and Macedonia, but also primarily with Kosovo.
