The Hague Tribunal decided yesterday to grant temporary release to former State Security (DB) Chief Jovica Stanisic and his deputy Franko Simatovic. The two men stand accused of war crimes committed in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina between 1991 and 1995. Former DB chiefs temporarily released The Court, presided by Judge Patrick Robinson, ruled that Stanisic and Simatovic had proven that they would not try to escape or contact witnesses, and that they would be back in court for the beginning of their trial. The Tribunal accepted the guarantees of the Serbian authorities that all the terms of their temporary release would be met. Stanisic is due to undergo full physical and psychological treatment at the military clinic in Belgrade (VMA), given that he is considered to be “a high suicide risk.”

Former DB chiefs temporarily released

The Court, presided by Judge Patrick Robinson, ruled that Stanišić and Simatović had proven that they would not try to escape or contact witnesses, and that they would be back in court for the beginning of their trial.

The Tribunal accepted the guarantees of the Serbian authorities that all the terms of their temporary release would be met.

Stanišić is due to undergo full physical and psychological treatment at the military clinic in Belgrade (VMA), given that he is considered to be “a high suicide risk.”
