Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic says that the EU’s approval of an investment framework for the Western Balkans will allow new investment in Serbia. Djelic said that the decision by European finance ministers was a very important one that would aid investment in Serbia’s infrastructure. Djelic: EU to aid investments in Serbia The EU has adopted a plan to ease and speed up investment and the approval of loans for projects related to infrastructure. “Our country has already received EUR 2.2bn from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Investment Bank for Infrastructure. We are talking about EUR 400mn for roads, EUR 250mn for railways, and EUR 200mn for the Serbian Electricity Company,” Djelic explained. He said that the next government had to ratify, as soon as possible, EUR 200mn worth of loans from these financial institutions for roads, and about EUR 80mn for the construction of a clinical center in Serbia. “New concessions laws must be adopted for local infrastructure, and priority must be given to Corridor 10, the highway to the Montenegrin border, and roads that will ensure a better life for our citizens,” the minister stressed, adding that the bypass around Belgrade should not be forgotten. Djelic said that he would be leading a Serbian delegation this weekend as governor of the EBRD, and that he would be asking for negotiations over a EUR 100mn loan for railways and EUR 50mn for the National Investment Plan to be accelerated. Asked what would happen with the loans if Serbia did not get a pro-European government, Djelic said that he was convinced that the existing loans would continue to stand. “Of course, an anti-European government cannot expect the support of Europe. On the other hand, a pro-European government, which I’m expecting, will secure significant funds, and the plan is to allocate EUR 4bn over the next four years towards national infrastructure,” Djelic outlined.
