Diaspora Minister Milica Cubrilo says that Serbs living aboard will have until April 20 to register to vote at the coming elections. Cubrilo said in an interview with daily Danas that the registration procedure involved sending voter details to diplomatic-consular offices by e-mail, fax, post, or in person. Serbs abroad to register to vote by April 20 She said that all of the information needed to register could be found on the website www.mzd.gov.rs. She said that there were currently 43,000 voters listed in the database. “There are more than half a million Serbs living abroad who are potential voters. The largest number of voters live in Western Europe and North America,” Cubrilo said, adding that the total number of Serbs living abroad was closer to three million. She said that the ministry had launched a campaign to increase the number of voters abroad in two phases, explaining that the first phase, for registering, had started on March 17 and would run until April 20, while the second phase would run from April 20 to May 11, with a message to citizens to use their vote. “The campaign will cost about EUR 12,600 and will be led in two directions. One direction will be towards ex-pats and led under the slogan ‘Show that you care,’ while the other will be focused on those in Serbia who have relatives, friends and acquaintances abroad, with the slogan ‘Remind your lot to vote,’” the minister explained. Cubrilo said that cooperation with the Public Administration and Local Self-Government Ministry had led to an agreement for removing the need to register the residence address of those living abroad. “An initiative has also begun to form a unified and digitalized electoral register, and an agreement to allow people to vote by mail, which would significantly reduce costs and increase the number of voters in the diaspora,” she said.
